NEUTERING
Neutering or castration, is the surgical removal of the testicles of a male dog or cat. It is generally performed to eliminate sexual activities and to make the animal sterile. There are other benefits to this procedure though. Both dogs and cats tend to take better care of themselves and become better pets. In dogs, it reduces the desire to roam, fight with other males and mark their territory. It also reduces the risk of some diseases such as prostate disease, testicular cancer and other diseases common in older male dogs. In cats it is also useful in reducing roaming, fighting and spraying as well as dramatically reducing the strong odour of male cat urine. This procedure is usually performed at 5-6 months of age.
SPAYING
Spaying or ovariohysterectomy is the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus. Although it is a routine procedure, spaying is actually major abdominal surgery requiring anesthesia and proper aseptic surgical technique. It is usually performed to sterilize a female dog or cat and prevent bothersome heat cycles. Other benefits include a dramatically reduced risk of mammary gland cancer, uterine cancer and uterine infections common in older un-spayed females.
